SETTING UP THE PROBLEMS USUALLY FACED IN A HARMONIUM

Though a Good quality Harmonium does not need any special care or maintenance
if used on a regular basis, there are however little precautions that can
help to get the best sound and service from your instrument.

1. Harmonium should be kept in a cool and dry place free of insects. Keep the Outer bellows covered for saving them from rat biting.

2. If not being used everyday, should at least be cleaned or kept in a clean place free of dust, which can cause buzzing in the reeds or otherwise wear in the exterior finish of the harmonium. (Never expose the harmonium to direct sunlight. This will damage the outside surface of polish.)

3. Do not leave the air inside while closing the harmonium bellows. Always press a few keys while closing a bellow so as to remove all the air from the inner bellows otherwise this would cause leakage in the harmonium.

4. In case of a buzzing sound in the reeds, try the procedure in the pictures below starting from SET-A. If this does not remedy the problem, try SET-B. (Buzzing of reeds can be caused due to either dust, loose reed or if the instrument has been in travel. It is not always the wood dust that can be removed with hard pumping of bellows. Unnecessary hard pumping of bellows may sometime cause the reed to go out of tune.) For fixing the buzzing problem, you will need: L shaped metal thin bar about half inch wide with slight angle on one end with less wider face entering the reeds tongue. (See Image-5,6,7 and 8 hereunder.) For a Scale Changer Model Harmonium, only Procedure SET-B is valid.

SET-A: Image-1 shows the removed key of the harmonium keyboard from where the air passes from the reeds and comes out of the keys finally producing sound. Image-2 shows a thin screw driver inserted in the hole and touching the reeds tongue very softly. (PLEASE NOTE: A Reed tongue is a very fragile portion of Brass or White Metal Sheet. Harder pressing of the screw driver may damage the reed permanently. If at any time following the actions as mentioned here, you feel that you will not be able to follow the correct procedures, please write to us for any further help.) Move the screw driver to the left or right position while very softly touching the tongue of the reed. One of the sides might remedy the problem of the buzz in the reed. If this does not help, then try the SET-B procedure.

SET-B: Image-5 shows the L shaped tool entered into the reeds tongue for checking the buzz in the reed. This can be done by clicking the reed & hearing the tongue touching the sides of the brass reed. If this happens, apply procedures shown on image 6 and 7 and again repeat the step from image-5. The buzzing sound should now be over.

5. Do not rub the reeds within the reed board with your hand or cloth or any other material which may sometimes cause the instrument to sound out of tune.

6. If you find the keys sticking in a regular model harmonium, try to fix the nails on the back of the keyboard which help the keys in moving straight (See Image-3) or try to fix the nails under the keys. (See Image-4 ). If any further information is required, please email us advice.

If in any case you are unabe to fix the trouble your Harmonium is having, please feel free to write to us for any further support or help at our Email.

The actions shown below are to be applied very precisely. If not used in the correct course, these may permanently damage the reed.

Therefore we request you to only use the following procedures if you are sure of the process.
